We read today that two of Jesus’s disciples were going to Emmaus when “Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.” I always wonder why they could not recognize the Risen Lord. Did His appearance change after the resurrection? Did He look different? I have no answer to those questions. However, I think Jesus gives us an important lesson today -- He wants to remind us that when we are too occupied or too busy in our lives, we can miss the Lord’s presence in very ordinary daily things. He often comes to us in many different ways -- in the sacraments, in the scripture, in the beauty of nature, and also in other people. He may not look exactly how you and I have imagined Him, but He is there, He is here. The Risen Christ is among us, but it is so easy to not recognize Him and then miss Him.
