Wednesday of the Third Week of Easter ‘a’

Around this time of the year, many of our children come to church to receive their First Holy Communion. During that special celebration I often ask them why we have Holy Communion, why is the Eucharist so important. And most times they would correctly say that in the host, that bread, they receive Jesus into their hearts. But then I try to ask them, why? -- why do we need Jesus? And I remember once a little boy raised his hand and said: just like we need to nurture our body with food and drink to grow and to gain strength, so in a similar way we need to feed our soul with Jesus to become more like Him, to become Holy, and to have a soul that would never die. For me that was a complete answer, so I didn’t need to add anything after that. This is exactly why Jesus left us the sacrament of the Eucharist -- to have a food that will make us holy and provide us with eternal life. “Jesus said to the crowds, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”
