Ecclesiastes 3 is a very popular reading for funerals. It says, “There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens. A time to give birth, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant…A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” There is so much truth in this. However, in a similar way there is also an appointed time for everything in our spiritual life. There is a time when we weep because of our sinful acts and desires, and a time when we should ‘dance’ for joy feeling the presence of our Lord and when we are able to overcome sin and temptation. I think this is what Jesus meant when He said: “We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a dirge, but you did not weep.” We need to weep when we are far away from God and dance when we are in His presence.
