Feast of St. James, Apostle

Writer's picture: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

Jesus said: “the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” So, in the same way we are called to serve others. However, I often wonder which is easier -- to serve others or to be humble enough to allow others to serve us? I like to remain independent, strong, and healthy, so I can use that strength in order to help and to serve other people who are in need. I can visit the sick, help the poor, give some advice to those who come to me to confession, and I offer prayers for those who mourn. I can do all those things, but am I able to let others do the same things for me? Am I humble enough to ask them to pray for me? Am I humble enough to ask for help? Am I humble enough to ask for advice? Am I humble enough to let others know that I am not as strong as I think? Yes, we are called to serve others, but we also need to ask God to help us welcome those who are willing to help us.
