First Sunday of Advent ‘b’

Reading the gospel for this First Sunday of Advent, you can clearly see that Jesus does not want you to waste your time. “Watch, therefore; you do not know when the lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning.” I often think that I would like to know that exact time and moment of the Lord’s coming. It would be nice to know for what day I need to prepare myself. But Jesus would not tell us that because He wants His disciple to be prepared each moment of their lives for meeting Him. Most of us, if we knew the exact time of Christ’s coming -- if He told you for example: I will return next month, or next year or five years from now -- would waste that time in between but would get ready right before His coming. Jesus doesn’t want that. Jesus wants His disciples -all of us - to be ready at all times, to live in an exemplary way, and to be the light to this world all the days of our life.
