Friday of the Fourth Week in Ordinary Time ‘a’

We are asked to always tell the truth and only the truth. However, there are times when we would rather avoid the truth or even lie since a certain truth might hurt another person. Someone asked me if it was OK to not say the truth to her mom who was very sick. She didn’t want to stress her mom more by telling her about her declining health. Yes, there are moments when we would rather choose to lie or to avoid saying the truth which might be hurtful. John the Baptist was arrested and beheaded only because he wasn’t afraid to speak the truth. He knew that he would pay the highest price for defending the truth, and so he did. John teaches us that that no matter how uncomfortable, hurtful, or even what consequences might bring, we should always defend the truth. Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth and the life.”
