Monday of the Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time ‘a’

If I asked you who is the greatest saint, most likely you would mention the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, St. Peter, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary Magdala or maybe one of the modern saints recently canonized. And yes, all of them are great saints that we can and should learn from how to live to receive eternal life. However, there are also those saints that the world does not know about. These are all those humble people who simply by their good way of living receive that same prize -- heaven. Perhaps that might be your grandmother, your uncle, or your parents. Today in the gospel the disciples ask Jesus who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. They were probably expecting that Jesus would mention some of the great prophets, maybe His Mother Mary, or maybe one of them, the disciples. But Jesus pointed to a simple insignificant child and said: “I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.” We have wonderful saints that were martyred or did some extraordinary things to gain their sanctity. However, today Jesus reminds us that the way to heaven is through humility.
