Saturday of the Twenty Fifth Week in Ordinary Time ‘a’

While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.’” Why are you telling us this now? the disciples might have said. Why now, when we are amazed at what you can do and we rejoice being with you, witnessing all these wonderful things? This is what I am thinking reading this passage -- the disciples were rejoicing, and all of a sudden Jesus bombarded them with some very sad news, Rejoice, yes, but not for much longer. All of this will be turned into tears. We all deal with sadness, difficulties, all kinds of problems that seem too difficult to overcome, and sometimes we don’t want to even think about them. We try to push them away and just rejoice in the moment. However, we need to remember that this is how life is -- there are moments of joy and moments of sadness. Jesus was handed over to men and He was killed. But that wasn’t the end of the story; afterwards there was the resurrection.
