The Ascension of the Lord

The eleven disciples went and saw the Lord being taken up into heaven. But first he gave them a mandate and a promise. The mandate was to go, make disciples of all nations, baptize them in the Name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all that I have commanded you. The promise was that they would not do this alone: Know that I am with you always, until the end of the age. The angels in the first reading, taken from the Acts of the Apostles, are asking the disciples “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?” Yes, exactly, why do you keep staring at the sky? Don’t you remember about that mandate and promise Jesus gave you just few minutes ago? The same mandate and promise are given to us today too. We do need to go to Mass, we need to have time for prayer, we need to go to the mountain and experience God’s presence, but we can’t stop there. We can’t just keep looking at the sky. We need to go into the world and testify about Our God. It will not be easy, at times it may even feel impossible, but remember about the promise: “Know that I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
