Some of us are just too scrupulous when it comes to religious practices. I have experienced some people being very stressed when coming to confession, only because they were worried not to miss confessing any sins. What if I missed something, would God forgive me? I am sure He would, unless you deliberately hid something. The Pharisees were quite scrupulous and wanted to do everything perfectly by following the law and commandments. So much so, that at times they forgot that they were doing this only to fulfill the law and they forgot about love for God and other people. God doesn’t want us to be so scrupulous because we want to avoid His anger. He wants us to follow the law and commandments out of love for Him and His people. That’s why Jesus reminds us today: “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”
