Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent ‘b’

“Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him,If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” We are calling ourselves Christians, which means we are Jesus’ disciples. So, what does it mean to be Jesus’ disciple? Today the Lord gives a very clear answer. He doesn’t say -- you my disciple if… you pray every day, go to Mass each Sunday, go to confessions once a month, read the bible, and send your children to Catholic school or religious education. Of course, all of those are very necessary and important things to follow. They are the tools that should help us deepen our relationship with God. However today Jesus is very specific by saying: “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples.” So, what does it mean to ‘remain in Jesus’ word?’ For me it means to listen to God’s word and implement it into my life. And not only in those moments of my life which are convenient to me, but to live with God’s word in my heart and through my actions all the days of my life, even in those most difficult moments when I have doubts or when others make fun of me. If we remain in Jesus’ word, then He will set us free forever.
