Friday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time ‘a’

Which commandment is the greatest? Which is most important? When you have hundreds of rules and regulations, it can be difficult to point out that one, most important commandment. Jewish people were so scrupulous that they divided the 10 commandments into over 600 more. So, no wonder that it was so hard to find that one, most important commandment. Jesus said: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus is telling us today that even if you forget all the commandments you have ever learned, even if you don’t know the church law and have never seen a Catholic Catechism, but follow only those two commandments -- loving God and loving another person -you don’t need any other commandments. Think about that this way: if you follow these two commandments, then automatically you will follow all of them. Love God and love your neighbor and everything will be just fine.
