We pray for the end of poverty and of hunger, and many of us try to help as much as possible to feed the hungry. There are many organizations and individuals that support those in need. We need to do that, and this is our Christian obligation. Every season of Lent, we start with a call for fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. It would be wonderful if one day poverty disappears. However this is never going to happen. The poor were always on this planet and unfortunately poverty will always exist. We need to pray for the poor and even more we should help as much as we can, but we shouldn’t expect the end of poverty in our world. Jesus reminds us today: “You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”
