Thursday after Ash Wednesday

Jesus said: “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?” If we twist that sentence a little bit and add a couple words, it will help us better understand what Jesus meant -- for whoever wishes to save his EARTHLY life will lose it, but whoever follows Jesus and His commandments in this life, will gain much more, life eternal. I feel sorry for those who don’t believe in the promises of Jesus and don’t believe that there is something much more to come after this earthly life, that there is heaven. People who don’t believe might only focus on this life. They would try to live as long as possible, most of the time very selfishly just to gain as much as possible and have a happy comfortable life. Jesus is warning us today: if you focus only on this life here and live selfishly, you may not gain life eternal. “Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?”
