Tuesday of the First Week of Advent ‘b’

Jesus said to His disciples: “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.” When I first hear these words, I think of those chosen disciples of Jesus, those who got the great privilege of touching Jesus, listening to Him, eating with Him, walking with Him, those who were chosen by the Lord. Yes, they were so blessed to live at the time and in the place where the Son of Man came. More than that -- He called them to follow Him. But then I keep forgetting that those very words of Jesus are addressed also to me and to you. We are so blessed to be part of Jesus’s Church, to be able to listen to His words through the scripture readings. We are blessed because we have holy sacraments that give us strength and healing. We are blessed because we have Jesus with us today, in the Eucharist. We can’t think of the first disciples and envy their being with Jesus back then. We rather should thank God that he gave us the blessing of being close to Jesus today.
